I created these paintings as an Artist in Residence on Monhegan Island, twelve miles off the coast of Maine, during the summer of 1990. The jury for the fellowship reviewed many of my college paintings and awarded me with the summer residency on Monhegan Island. These works clearly illustrate a break from my college work, and redefined the nature of painting for me at that time. The paintings became a simplified form of communication, much like a road sign communicates.
