Paper based works, based on an underlying design in the painting “Pirate” done on Monhegan Island. The design itself is loosely inspired by a painting by my painting mentor Juris Ubans. The basic foundational design to these collages is shown in a line drawing below (“Waves Drawing”). The rhythm and repetition represented in these collages are like a repetitious meditation that industrial workers act out when going to work each day, repeating certain specialized behaviors that their jobs require. This repetition of behavior is a ritual, something instinctual to all animals. This is the “art” to these works: testimonials on an animal activity which consumes at least one third of the animal’s time in its short life - labor. Labor is suffering, suffering is life.
